A personal journal of a voyage of three hundred & twenty days from New York to San Francisco February 20th 1849 to Jany. 6th 1850: also of a residence in San Francisco of 414 days from Jany 6th 1850 to Febr. 20th 1851 in a series of letters to my dear wife / by Joseph Weed.

Joseph Weed chronicled his 1849 voyage on the steamer Hartford from New York to San Francisco in letters to his wife which he later arranged in a bound volume. From February to December 1849 Weed's letters, both numerous and detailed, describe life on board ship, stops in Bermunda and South America, weather, sea conditions, passengers, and crew. From January 1850 to February 1851, Weed's letters record his life in San Francisco, describing the city, his shop, his business partners, and later his work as a local tax collector. He discusses state politics and the destruction of San Francisco by fire. Laid in the volume is a letter dated October 20 1849 by Weed complaining about the terrible service of the Pacific Steam Boat Monopoly and a story about two sailors in Jamaica in 1825.
